Oxidation Reduction Potential

Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP), also referred to as ‘Redox Potential’, is a measurement of water’s ability to oxidize contaminants. An ORP meter measures the ORP with a probe in millivolt units. The higher the value, the more oxidizers there are than reducers and the water has more oxidizing power.

In water with a high ORP, oxidizing agents kill pathogens by stripping electrons away from their cell membranes. The figure illustrates the reaction: Compound A is the microorganism contaminant and Compound B is an oxidizing agent. Typical oxidizers include chlorine compounds, chloramines, and other sanitizers.
